ST. ARNOLDUS DAY

Drink Beer, Not Water
Legend describes St. Arnoldus as a man who single-handedly wiped out the village plague by encouraging the masses to "Drink Beer, Not Water". Arnie knows how to cure all that ails and we could not agree more. During July, toast with your favorite Belgian beer in gratitude.

In 2011, Left of Sunset was commissioned by Artisanal Imports to develop a brand identity and point-of-sale materials for their inaugural Signature Event Program, St. Arnoldus Day. The event would feature Artisanal's Belgian Beer portfolio and be rolled-out at select restaurants and bars across the country.

RESULTS

With each passing year, the number of participating accounts grows and Left of Sunset has continued to refresh graphics annually. The materials are high-quality and remain hanging up or in use at many establishments year round--extending brand exposure beyond the event time frame. Artisanal Imports has since expanded their Signature Events featuring beers with Dutch and German origins. Dates of events usually coincide with seasonal, cultural celebrations of the regions, such as King's Day in the Spring and Oktoberfest in the Fall.

PROCESS

We were inspired by illuminated manuscript iconography and painted renderings of St. Arnoldus. Collaborating with illustrator, Scott Wallace, we turned Arnie into an icon for Belgian Beers. Left of Sunset also worked with a few University of Oregon professors of Latin to help us translate an official slogan for the event. "Bibe Cervesiam Non Aquam" is memorable and fun to say.

A happy discovery: When the flag is placed over a window or light source, it looks like leaded stained glass art.

TESTIMONIAL

Working with Van is a refreshing and memorable creative effort.
She provides just the right amount of art direction to finish
successfully and on time. Her iterative feedback is tactful, kind, collaborative, and instinctively on point.
